A six month retrospective on the Framework 13 laptop.

I’m not a Framework shill but I do really enjoy the ethos behind Framework Laptop, a laptop brand focused around modularity and the right to repair.

I am lucky enough to be able to afford one, and I’ve owned mine since early December last year and have daily driven it ever since!

It’s extremely easy to use out of the box with Linux. Various Framework laptops ship as Ubuntu-certified/Fedora Ready/otherwise ‘officially supported’ by several Linux distros. In this case, there’s no fighting with getting the fingerprint sensor to work (although you may want to disable the light, which you can do with sudo ectool led power off).

My major gripes with the laptop comes with battery life and heating up, which I do hope that the Framework Laptop 13 Pro solves. I came to Framework from a Macbook Air (and before that, from a Lenovo Yoga laptop). It’s been said many times before, but Macbooks are simply unbeatable when it comes to build quality. I also travel a lot and still require a laptop with me - a Macbook works best when it comes to that.

However, the main reason I continue to use my Framework is my distaste for other operating systems (MacOS window management :notcool:) and the fact that it’s the best mainstream laptop with Linux support. I prefer the keyboard and screen over Thinkpad ones (like my T14s), and besides, being built with repair in mind means that even if some aspects are subpar now there will be explicitly supported upgrade options in the future. I look forward to a Framework 13 Pro upgrade and the Ship of Theseus dilemna that comes with it.
